About Me

Hey there, folks!

Let me introduce myself – I’m Chuck Thompson, and I’ll tell ya, woodturning is my bread and butter. I’ve been playing around with chunks of timber for over 30 years, turning logs into keepsakes. If the smell of fresh wood shavings gets your heart racing, and the soothing hum of a lathe is music to your ears, well, my friend, you’ve come to the right place.

I reckon that a man and his lathe can tell stories that’d make your heart weep. So I’m happy to welcome you in my cozy corner of the world wide web, where shavings fly and the coffee’s always on. Stick around, partner, and let me share the tall tales and wisdom of a lifetime spent turnin’ and churnin’ at the lathe.

But before we dive into the sawdust, let’s take a step back and let me share a little about the man behind the lathe.

My Journey into the Woodturning World

Born and raised in the heart of Tennessee, I’ve been a country boy at heart my entire life. The peaceful lull of the countryside kindled a deep respect for nature in my heart. My Grandpa, a carpenter by trade, was my first introduction to the world of wood. As a boy, I’d spend hours in the old barn watching him shape logs into something magical on his worn-out lathe.

Fast forward a few years, and I found myself face to face with a lathe for the very first time. It was like love at first sight – the spinning, the carving, the beautiful creations you could make from a simple block of wood. I was hooked. Over the years, I’ve nurtured my craft, moving from simple candle holders and bottle stoppers to complex hollow forms and intricate segmented turnings.

Beyond the Lathe

Apart from woodturning, I have a few other tricks up my sleeve. When I’m not churning out some new creation on my trusty lathe, you can find me fishing down at the creek, cheering on our local baseball team, or tryin’ my hand at mastering the banjo. Yep, I’ve got eclectic tastes, but that’s all part of the charm, right?

At the heart of everything I do is my family. My incredible wife, Barbara, our two kids, Daisy and Dylan, and our golden retriever, Barkley, are my biggest cheerleaders. Barbara likes to joke that I’ve got more photographs of my woodturnings than of the family! Well, it’s a close competition, I must admit.

Inspiration and Philosophy

As for my inspirations, well, they’re as varied as the grains in a piece of spalted beech. I find inspiration in the natural world around me, in the works of other talented woodturners, and in the daily interactions with my family. I guess you could say my woodturning philosophy is pretty simple: “Respect the wood”. It’ll tell you what it wants to become.

Woodturning is a dialogue between the artisan and the timber. We must listen to the wood, respect its strengths and limitations, and allow it to guide our hands. It’s not just about carving an object; it’s about revealing the masterpiece that’s already hidden inside the block.

Facts and Quirks

  1. My favorite wood to work with is spalted maple because of its unique grain patterns.
  2. Despite my love for woodturning, I can’t climb a tree to save my life.
  3. I have a minor obsession with collecting vintage baseball cards.
  4. My biggest pet peeve? Finding wood shavings in my coffee mug!
  5. On my bucket list? To carve a full-size canoe from a single log!

To sum it up, I’m just a simple guy with a passion for creating beautiful things from blocks of wood. With every project, every turn, I strive to bring the beauty of nature into the homes and hearts of folks around me. Woodturning is the rhythm that keeps my heart ticking and my creative juices flowing.

I hope this glimpse into my world has given you a better sense of the man behind the lathe. So whether you’re a seasoned turner, a budding enthusiast, or just someone who appreciates the beauty of handmade wooden items, welcome! I look forward to sharing this journey with you. And hey, if you ever need a bit of advice or a friendly ear, don’t hesitate to reach out. After all, we’re in this woodturning adventure together!
